CANAKKALE/TROY/ISTANBUL
This
morning visit the ruins of Troy. Use your imagination to reconstruct its
past lost in legends from the excavation. This afternoon cross the
Dardanelles by ferry and continue driving along the Sea of Marmara, arriving
in the fabulous city of Istanbul, situated astride two continents, Asia
and Europe. Check into your hotel for the evening.
ISTANBUL
After
breakfast enjoy a full day of sightseeing to view the monuments which
reflect the rich culture that was centred here between the 4th and 15th
centuries. Stroll the open air courtyards of Topkapi Palace, the official
residence of Turkish Sultans for centuries. The palace houses the world's
finest collection of Chinese porcelain, Arabic and Greek manuscripts and
priceless jewels including an 86 carat diamond. Dominating the area
of the Hippodrome is the Church of St. Sophia. Its massive dome
system is a magnificent architectural feat. Completed in the 6th century,
it served first as a Christian church, then a mosque, now a museum with
beautiful mosaics throughout. After your tour return to your hotel for
dinner.
ISTANBUL
Start your day with
a visit to the famous Blue Mosque built by
Sultan Ahmed. It is the world's only mosque with six minarets. Then, descend
into Yerebatan Sarayi, The Sunken Palace Cistern, ancient vaults upheld by
336 columns. Take a scenic ride across the Bosphorus, a crucial waterway
linking the Mediteranean to Black Sea. The Bosphorus Bridge was the first bridge to link
the continents of Europe and Asia. Lastly, visit the famous Grand Bazaar,
a medieval supermarket with approximately 4000 little shops containing Turkish
specialities and where you can bargain and carry away treasures. Return to
your hotel for dinner and the evening.
