 Florya on the Marmara coast west of Istanbul between Yesilkoy and Kucukcekmece used to be a quiet country area frequented only by hunters in the l9th century. However, when Ataturk began to spend holidays here in the early 20th century, Florya quickly became a popular seaside resort.

The mansion constructed here for Ataturk by Istanbul Municipality in 1935 was designed by Seyfi Arkan.

In 1936 Ataturk spent the months of June and July here. As well as numerous meetings with politicians and scholars, he received many guests, the most celebrated of whom was King Ed- ward VIII of England and his future wife Mrs. Simpson.

Ataturk stayed here for the last time in May 1938, five months before his death. The mansion was used as a seaside retreat by subsequent Turkish presidents, including Ismet Inonu, Celal Bayar, Cevdet Sunay, Fahri Koruturk and Kenan Evren.

The mansion and its other buildings were placed under the auspices of the Department of National Palaces on 16 September 1988. They were restored, and converted into the Ataturk Museum, containing a permanent exhibition of photographs entitled "Ataturk in Istanbul". There is a collection of books about Ataturk, some of which are on sale. The other buildings have been repaired and now house a club for members of parliament. A new building between these houses a restaurant and cafe, and there is an outdoor cafe in the garden during the summer months.
